Looking for Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT)?
Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) is a unique and highly effective form of therapy that helps people understand and improve their emotional relationships with themselves and others. Based on attachment science, a theory of personality development and intimate relationships, EFT is a humanistic, systemic and experiential psychotherapy that focuses on key emotions that shape individual experience and intimate bonds. Initially developed by Sue Johnson in the 1980s for the treatment of couples, it is proving to be equally effective in individual and family therapy.
EFT suggests that we are biologically programmed to create and maintain strong emotional bonds throughout our lives, providing a solid foundation on which we can build supportive relationships with others. As human beings, we all need reliable, trustworthy people in our lives to feel supported and comforted! When these bonds are strong, we tend to be happier and healthier, and better able to cope with the stress of life’s challenges. However, when we’ve experienced trauma, abandonment or have an insecure attachment style, we learn to protect ourselves.
“In insecure relationships, we disguise our vulnerabilities so our partner never really sees us“
(Sue Johnson)
Being able to access, distill and organize our emotional experiences and to clearly communicate them to those we love can fully transform our lives and our relationships.
